Shiroabhyanga is a treatment based on the Ayurvedic system of healing, which has been practiced in India for over a thousand years. To this day, it is an integral part of Indian families, bringing relaxation and daily healing. It releases stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles, and joints of the head, face, neck, and shoulders.
How does it work?
Similar to the more common practice of craniosacral therapy, this treatment is performed while fully clothed. The client sits, while the practitioner sits or stands at a higher level than the client. Ayurvedic oil is applied to the scalp and neck using a range of different movements, including kneading and compression techniques, over the neck, shoulders, face, and scalp areas. (The usage of oil is optional.) The session concludes with the activation of related pressure points on the feet to relax and ground the nervous system.
Even though the participants don’t need to undress, it is good to wear clothes
that are loose and comfortable, and that give access to the back of the neck
and shoulders.
Who could especially benefit from Shiroabyanga?
This treatment is excellent for everyone. It can be a Godsend for people who
work with computers, students, or anyone whose eyes experience a lot of
strain. It can also help those who suffer from insomnia, headaches, migraine,
and sinusitis.
Shiroabhyanga should be avoided if you have had recent surgery, or a
head or neck injury; a history of thrombosis or embolism; spondylitis or spondylosis.
If you have high or low blood pressure, diabetes, epilepsy, any kind of heart
condition, cancer or osteoporosis, talk to your doctor before arranging a
treatment. Always make sure that you avoid alcohol for at least five hours
before the treatment.
Devapria began her formal training in bodywork at the age of sixteen. However, she started giving Indian head massages to her family members at a much younger age. This practice has been passed down from mother to daughter for centuries. Since then, she has trained in various modalities, including Craniosacral Balancing, Myofascial Release (also known as Rebalancing), Holistic Massage, Hawaiian Massage, Ayurvedic Yoga Massage, Japanese Face Massage, and Joint Release. Her interest and experience in these diverse forms of bodywork are reflected in the unique and comprehensive training sessions she leads, which are rich in both subject material and presence.
